All four applications use the same proprietary EVA-based multilayer film bioreactor bag from Cytiva's Logan, Utah facility. During COVID-19, Cytiva's Cellbag production was the rate-limiting step in global vaccine manufacturing speed -- WHO, Gavi, and national governments tried to boost vaccine production in 2020-2021 and found that Cytiva could not supply enough bags. A Danaher subsidiary's Utah bag factory determined vaccine rollout timelines globally. The same bags that produce the cancer immunotherapy treating a patient in Houston also produce the pandemic vaccines stockpiled by the US military for biodefense.

    Cytiva was created from GE Healthcare's 2004 acquisition of Amersham Biosciences -- a company that had grown from Amersham International, a UK government-created organization established in 1946 to commercialize radioisotope byproducts from the UK's nuclear weapons program. Amersham (named after the Buckinghamshire town near Harwell nuclear research center) handled radioactive material for nuclear medicine and eventually diversified into life science tools as nuclear medicine demand flattened. GE acquired Amersham to build a life sciences instrumentation platform alongside its medical imaging business. In 2020, Danaher acquired GE Healthcare Life Sciences for $21.4B, rebranding it Cytiva. The lineage runs: UK nuclear weapons program byproducts (1946) → nuclear medicine radiotracer company → life science tools → global bioreactor bag monopoly for COVID vaccine production.
