In 2019, an explosion at a m-phenylenediamine (MPD) chemical plant in eastern China — MPD is the key precursor to DuPont's Nomex aramid paper used in transformer insulation — directly triggered a global Nomex supply disruption and a transformer insulation price spike. The incident revealed that Nomex production depends on Chinese MPD feedstock, even though DuPont is a US company. Transformer manufacturers in Europe and North America reported lead time extensions for H-class transformer insulation kits.

DuPont's Nafion perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membrane is used in three completely separate energy supply chains that share no obvious connection: (1) industrial chlor-alkali electrolysis — Nafion membranes replaced the mercury amalgam process for making chlorine and caustic soda, enabling cleaner chemical production; (2) PEM fuel cell membranes — Nafion NRE series is in Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicles; (3) PEM electrolyzer membranes — Nafion N117 is in the green hydrogen electrolyzers from ITM Power, Nel Hydrogen, and Siemens Energy. Chlorine production for PVC pipe, hydrogen mobility for zero-emission trucks, and green hydrogen for decarbonizing industrial processes all depend on the same proton-conducting fluoropolymer invented by DuPont in the 1960s. DuPont now licenses Nafion production to Chemours (a DuPont spin-off) while retaining intellectual property rights — making this a layered IP licensing supply chain dependency.

DuPont's Tyvek — a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) flash-spun nonwoven fabric — is used in four entirely unrelated supply chains from the same Richmond, Virginia manufacturing facility: (1) building construction (Tyvek HomeWrap: moisture/air barrier installed under exterior cladding of every US house; 70%+ residential wrap market share), (2) hazmat protective garments (Tyvek 400/500/600 single-use suits for CBRN chemical protection, industrial spill response, and COVID-era PPE), (3) medical device sterilization packaging (Tyvek allows sterilizing gases through while maintaining sterile barrier), and (4) postal mailers (FedEx Pak and USPS Priority Mail envelopes). The same plant that wraps US houses against moisture leakage also makes the suit worn by responders at chemical accident scenes, the pouch around sterile surgical instruments, and the envelope delivering Amazon returns. DuPont Tyvek is arguably the broadest material application breadth of any single material from a single manufacturer.

DuPont's Nomex 900 Series papers (910, 914, 915) are specifically designed for liquid-immersed power transformers, enabling either (a) increased reliability and longer transformer life through superior thermal endurance versus conventional kraft paper, or (b) reduced transformer size and weight at the same power rating. Utilities and transformer OEMs specifying Nomex 900 Series create a specification lock that cannot be broken without a full insulation system re-design and test. The lead time for re-qualifying a transformer design around alternative materials runs 2–5 years — effectively making Nomex the only viable option for any transformer designed to its spec, regardless of DuPont pricing or supply conditions.

DuPont de Nemours traces to 1802 when Éleuthère Irénée du Pont de Nemours founded a gunpowder mill on the Brandywine Creek near Wilmington, Delaware — making DuPont one of the oldest US industrial companies. From explosives, DuPont expanded into nitrocellulose-based products (paints, films), then synthetic chemistry: Nylon (1938, Wallace Carothers), Teflon/PTFE (1938, Roy Plunkett), Kevlar (1965, Stephanie Kwolek), Tyvek (1967), Nafion (~1968). DuPont has spun off multiple major companies: Chemours (chemicals, including Teflon/Nafion production license), Corteva (agriculture), DowDuPont merged then separated into Dow/DuPont/Corteva.
