Enterprise Products Partners L.P.

HQ US

Largest US midstream operator; holds the largest LPG/NGL salt cavern storage position at Mont Belvieu, Texas. Enterprise's Mont Belvieu complex includes dozens of solution-mined salt cavern storage cells in the Barbers Hill salt dome, holding hundreds of millions of barrels of NGL storage capacity. Also operates fractionation, pipelines, and marine export terminals at the same complex. Mont Belvieu's propane price is the global benchmark — Enterprise, as the largest storage operator, holds significant pricing influence over seasonal propane markets. Also operates the LOOP (Louisiana Offshore Oil Port) deepwater crude oil terminal.

Enterprise Products Mont Belvieu NGL Complex

US

Mont Belvieu, TX · fractionation

World's largest NGL fractionation complex. Mont Belvieu collectively (all operators) has 36 fractionation units with 4+ MMb/d capacity as of 2025 — a 35% gain since Jan 2023 and a doubling since 2018. Enterprise is the largest single operator at Mont Belvieu. NGLs arrive by pipeline from Permian Basin, Eagle Ford, Haynesville, Appalachia, Midcontinent, Rockies. Separated purity products (propane, ethane, butane) leave by pipeline to petrochemical plants, exports, and residential distribution. Mont Belvieu's propane price is the global benchmark referenced in Asia and Europe.

Enterprise Products — Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill Salt Caverns

US

Mont Belvieu, Chambers County, Texas · mine

Enterprise's salt cavern LPG/NGL storage at the Barbers Hill salt dome, Mont Belvieu. Dozens of solution-mined caverns, each hundreds of feet tall and wide, holding propane, ethane, butane, and natural gasoline under pressure. Total Mont Belvieu area (all operators) holds ~50% of all US propane storage capacity. Enterprise is the largest single operator. Storage caverns take 5+ years to develop via continuous salt dissolution. The geology is irreplaceable — only Gulf Coast Jurassic salt domes support this type of storage.

US Strategic Petroleum Reserve — Big Hill, Texas (Reference: Same Geology)

US

Jefferson County, Texas (near Beaumont) · mine

Note: This facility is a US government (DOE) asset, not Enterprise-operated. Listed here for geographic context: the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) sites at Big Hill TX, Bryan Mound TX (near Freeport), West Hackberry LA, and Bayou Choctaw LA use the SAME salt dome geology as the commercial LPG storage hubs. The SPR stores ~600M barrels of crude oil in Gulf Coast salt caverns. The proximity of commercial LPG storage (Mont Belvieu, 30 miles from Big Hill) and the SPR crude storage illustrates that the Gulf Coast salt dome belt is the single most strategically important energy storage geology in the United States.

  • Did you know2023

Enterprise Products Partners is the largest US midstream operator, controlling the Mont Belvieu, Texas NGL hub where propane prices for North America are benchmarked. Mont Belvieu's salt cavern NGL storage (in the Barbers Hill salt dome) is a price-setting chokepoint: when propane inventory in Mont Belvieu is low (as in early 2014, the Polar Vortex winter), retail propane prices can double or triple nationally within weeks. Enterprise's fractionation at Mont Belvieu separates the same NGL stream into ethane (feedstock for Chevron Phillips and LyondellBasell polyethylene — food packaging and consumer products), propane (residential heating in rural US, BBQ fuel, petrochemical feedstock), and butane (premium gasoline blending). The same NGL from one Permian Basin well, after passing through Enterprise's Mont Belvieu hub, simultaneously becomes: the plastic bag in your grocery store (ethane → polyethylene), the fuel in your outdoor grill (propane → consumer), and the high-octane component in your gasoline (butane → alkylate). Enterprise's dominant position in this hub gives it implicit pricing influence across residential heating, consumer packaging, and gasoline markets simultaneously.
