Ergon International was founded in 1954 in Vicksburg, Mississippi by brothers Leo and Clinton Aldridge who acquired a small refinery to process local crude oil. The key strategic differentiation was naphthenic crude -- certain Gulf Coast crude oils are 'naphthenic' (high in cycloalkane rings) rather than paraffinic, and naphthenic crude produces specialty oils with different properties. While major refiners focused on transportation fuels from paraffinic crude, Ergon specialized in naphthenic products where the market was smaller but margins were higher and competition was limited. The transformer oil business grew because naphthenic oils have lower pour points and better low-temperature performance than paraffinic transformer oils -- critical for transformers in cold climates. Ergon's Vicksburg refinery processes naphthenic crude from local fields and has become the world's largest single-site naphthenic specialty products manufacturer, with transformer oil being a major product. The same Vicksburg, Mississippi refinery that has operated since 1954 is now one of the primary sources for the dielectric fluid that insulates every transformer in the US power grid.
