    Turkish boron from Eti Maden's western Anatolia mines simultaneously flows into four completely separate critical supply chains: (1) Pharmaceutical borosilicate glass — boron trioxide (B₂O₃) is 10-15% by weight of Type I borosilicate pharmaceutical glass (the material in every vaccine vial, injectable syringe, and glass drug cartridge); every COVID mRNA vaccine vial contains Turkish boron; (2) Neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets — the 'B' in NdFeB magnets; boron is ~1% of NdFeB magnet mass but is essential to the crystal structure that gives NdFeB its high coercivity; every EV motor, wind turbine generator, and defense guidance system using NdFeB magnets requires Turkish boron; (3) Fiberglass wind turbine blades — E-glass fiberglass contains ~7% boron oxide (from borax); the blades of wind turbines globally are reinforced with E-glass containing Eti Maden boron; (4) Nuclear reactor neutron moderation — boric acid is added to nuclear reactor coolant to adjust neutron flux and control reactor power; boron carbide rods are neutron absorber control elements.     Eti Maden was established in 1935 by the Turkish state under the etatism policy of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's government — a period when Turkey strategically nationalized critical natural resources and established state enterprises to control them. The Turkish boron deposits in western Anatolia had been known for centuries (Ottoman miners extracted tincal boron minerals from surface deposits). Atatürk's government realized Turkey held an extraordinary concentration of global boron reserves and established Eti Maden to prevent foreign (primarily American and British) control of these deposits. The mineral deposits were named geological accidents of plate tectonics: boron was concentrated in Turkish crust through ancient volcanic hydrothermal processes unique to the Aegean-Anatolian geological transition zone. Turkey's ~70% of global economically minable boron reserves gives the Turkish state (through Eti Maden) near-monopoly pricing power in global boron markets — one of the few examples of an entirely legitimate natural resource monopoly based on geology rather than cartelization. Turkey has used this position to promote value-added processing (exporting refined borates rather than raw ore) and to extract strategic benefit from what would otherwise be an unremarkable country-specific geological endowment.
