[single-source] Evonik Rheinfelden's SiCl4 plant was originally commissioned in 1942 under IG Farben as part of the Degussa division's silicon tetrachloride program for wartime smoke-screen production (ZnCl₂/SiCl4 hydrolysis generates dense HCl smoke). After WWII the plant transitioned to civilian use but retained corrosion-resistant distillation infrastructure that made it immediately competitive for semiconductor-grade SiCl4 when that market emerged in the 1960s. Evonik's 80+ year institutional knowledge in chlorosilanes handling is one reason the facility remains difficult to replicate, despite commodity SiCl4 chemistry being well-documented.
