Fluorsid converts acid-grade fluorspar into hydrofluoric acid (HF) at Sardinia, which then goes into two completely separate supply chains: refrigerant fluorochemicals (via HFC and HFO manufacturers) and aluminum smelting (via aluminum fluoride). The aluminum smelting industry uses aluminum fluoride to lower the melting temperature of aluminum oxide in electrolytic cells -- without it, aluminum production costs increase significantly and global primary aluminum supply would be disrupted. The HFC refrigerant industry uses HF as the starting material for all fluorinated refrigerants. A single Sardinian chemical plant sits at the intersection of the global aluminum supply chain and the global refrigerant supply chain -- two industries monitored by entirely separate procurement teams and government agencies.
