FrieslandCampina traces to 1871 when Dutch dairy farmers in Friesland and Drenthe provinces began organizing cooperatives to collectively process and market milk -- one of the first large-scale farmer cooperative organizations in Europe. The merger of Friesland Foods and Campina in 2008 created FrieslandCampina, combining two of the Netherlands' largest dairy cooperatives into a single organization owned by approximately 10,000 Dutch dairy farmers. The cooperative structure means profits are paid to farmer-members rather than external shareholders -- making FrieslandCampina one of the world's largest farmer-owned businesses. FrieslandCampina's Vivinal whey protein brand (used in Nestlé NAN, Mead Johnson Enfamil, and other global infant formula brands) is a byproduct of cheese-making: when Dutch farmers deliver milk to FrieslandCampina for cheese production, the whey that separates from the curds is processed into infant formula protein rather than discarded as waste. Dutch cows, through the cooperative, supply the protein that feeds infants globally.
