Fuji Electric was founded in 1923 in Tokyo as a joint venture between Furukawa Electric (a Japanese copper mining and wire company) and Siemens AG -- a German-Japanese technology alliance at a time when Japan was industrializing rapidly by adopting German electrical engineering. Furukawa held 50%, Siemens 50%. The Siemens partnership gave Fuji Electric access to German electrical equipment designs and manufacturing methods, which Fuji then adapted and manufactured for the Japanese market. Siemens eventually divested its Fuji Electric stake, leaving Fuji as an independent Japanese electrical equipment company. Fuji Electric's unusual breadth -- from IGBT power semiconductors to vending machines -- reflects the Japanese keiretsu industrial model where companies diversify into adjacent businesses to maintain full employment and internal capital deployment. The same Fuji Electric that designs power semiconductor modules for appliance inverters also operates the vending machine that dispenses canned coffee at Japanese train stations -- using the very refrigeration power electronics it manufactures to keep the beverages cold.
