Galaxy Surfactants Ltd.
Galaxy Surfactants Ltd. (Tarapur, Maharashtra India; NSE: GALAXYSURF; ~₹4,000 Cr revenue) is one of the world's largest SLES manufacturers by volume. Founded 1986; produces SLES and a full range of anionic, amphoteric, and specialty surfactants at its Tarapur Maharashtra plant (primary) and US facility. Customers include Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, Henkel, and L'Oréal. Galaxy is unusual in the surfactant industry for having vertically integrated backwards into fatty alcohol ethoxylation and sulfonation at the same Tarapur site. Estimated ~10-14% global SLES share by volume — making it the largest single-site SLES producer in Asia outside of multinational Verbund complexes.

Galaxy Surfactants' primary and largest manufacturing facility at Tarapur Maharashtra India (Boisar MIDC, Thane district; ~75 km north of Mumbai). This is one of the largest dedicated surfactant manufacturing sites in Asia outside of multinational Verbund complexes. Produces the full Galaxy product range including SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), SLES variants, cocamidopropyl betaine, and specialty care surfactants. The Tarapur site is vertically integrated: fatty alcohol ethoxylation and sulfonation in a single complex. Galaxy disclosed in its FY2024 annual report that Unilever and P&G together represent >40% of revenue. Source: https://www.galaxysurfactants.com/investor-relations/annual-report/

Did you know2023
Galaxy Surfactants' SLES (sodium laureth sulfate) chemistry — the foaming agent in Unilever, P&G, and Colgate shampoos and body washes — is structurally identical to the surfactant base used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) injection fluids. In EOR applications, surfactants are injected into depleted oil reservoirs to reduce the interfacial tension between crude oil and the rock formation, enabling additional oil recovery that would otherwise be uneconomical. The same ethoxylated fatty alcohol chemistry that creates the foam in a Pantene shampoo bottle is the same chemistry (at different concentration and formulation) injected into Texas Permian Basin oil wells to recover additional crude. Galaxy Surfactants' Tarapur, Maharashtra plant simultaneously supplies the personal care supply chain (shampoo and body wash for Unilever's global brand portfolio) and the oilfield chemical supply chain (through surfactant packages used by oilfield service companies for EOR). The Indian surfactant manufacturer that makes consumer cleansing products for Western beauty brands also contributes to the crude oil production optimization that supplies the gasoline those same consumers buy.
Galaxy Surfactants Limited ↗Origin2024
Galaxy Surfactants (Mumbai, India), started by five friends in the 1980s with 30 metric tons of capacity, now produces 400,000 tonnes/year of surfactants across 7 plants (5 India, 1 Egypt, 1 USA) and exports to 80+ countries. It is India largest oleochemical-based surfactant manufacturer, directly competing with Stepan Company in the North American and European LABSA/LAS market while remaining little-known in Western business press.
Galaxy Surfactants ↗Concentration2024
Galaxy Surfactants Ltd. (Tarapur Maharashtra India; NSE: GALAXYSURF) is the world's largest dedicated SLES manufacturer by volume at a single production site, yet is virtually unknown to the consumers whose shampoo it makes. Galaxy supplies the anionic surfactants inside Unilever's Dove, TRESemmé, and Sunsilk brands and P&G's Head & Shoulders and Pantene brands, among others. Over 40% of Galaxy's FY2024 revenue came from just two customers (Unilever and P&G). Galaxy is a publicly listed company on India's NSE with a market cap of approximately ₹10,000 crore (~$1.2B) — making it a mid-cap Indian chemical stock that carries an outsized systemic role in global personal care supply chains. Galaxy is not vertically integrated into fatty alcohols (it buys from Wilmar, KLK, Sasol), creating a feedstock dependency that Kao and BASF do not share.
