GlobalWafers Co., Ltd.

HQ TW · Hsinchuwebsite ↗

Taiwanese silicon wafer company (TWSE: 6488, HQ Hsinchu Science Park; ~NT$60B revenue; Sino-American Silicon Products parent); world's 3rd-largest 300mm silicon wafer producer after acquiring SunEdison Semiconductor (US, formerly Monsanto Electronic Materials Company) in 2016. GlobalWafers operates wafer manufacturing in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea (South Korea facility from Siltron purchase), Denmark, and Texas USA. The failed 2022 acquisition of Siltronic (blocked by Germany) would have made GlobalWafers the world's 2nd-largest silicon wafer company by capacity. GlobalWafers is controlled by the Hsu Hao (徐秀蘭) family — the same Taiwanese industrial family behind Sino-American Silicon Products, one of Taiwan's largest silicon-based materials companies.

  • Origin2023

GlobalWafers' largest single acquisition — SunEdison Semiconductor, purchased in 2016 — traces to a remarkable corporate lineage: SunEdison Semiconductor was formerly MEMC Electronic Materials, which was formerly Monsanto Electronic Materials Company (MEMC). Monsanto Corporation — globally known as the agricultural chemicals and GMO seeds company (maker of Roundup herbicide and Roundup Ready soybeans) — was one of the original US silicon semiconductor material pioneers. Monsanto's Electronic Materials Company (Monsanto Electronic Materials Company, founded 1959) produced silicon wafers for the nascent US semiconductor industry using chemical vapor deposition techniques related to Monsanto's existing chemical processing expertise. The agricultural chemicals company built the semiconductor wafer business because both required precision chemical processing. Monsanto spun off MEMC in 1990; MEMC became SunEdison Semiconductor; GlobalWafers acquired SunEdison Semiconductor in 2016. The Taiwanese wafer company's US and European production capacity thus traces to Monsanto — the herbicide maker.

  • Chokepoint2024

GlobalWafers' failed €4.35B acquisition of Siltronic AG (blocked by Germany in January 2022) exposed a structural tension in semiconductor supply chain geopolitics: Taiwan produces the world's most advanced chips at TSMC, and Taiwanese companies hold significant positions in the silicon wafer supply chain that feeds those same fabs. GlobalWafers, controlled by the Taiwanese Hsu family, already operates wafer plants in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Denmark, and Texas; adding Siltronic's Germany operations would have made a Taiwanese family company the world's second-largest silicon wafer supplier to both TSMC and European chip fabs. Germany's blocking of this acquisition — one of the first major EU semiconductor supply chain protectionism decisions — reflected the view that European chip manufacturing sovereignty requires European-controlled silicon wafer supply. GlobalWafers responded by expanding its Texas facility under US CHIPS Act support: the company that failed to buy a German wafer plant now receives US government subsidies to build American wafer capacity.
