Did you know2024
Graymont's Western US operations supply lime to Nevada and Utah gold mines for cyanide heap leach and carbon-in-pulp gold extraction — processes that require lime to maintain the alkaline conditions (pH 10-11) necessary for cyanide to dissolve gold from ore. The same lime product supplied to Nevada gold mines (which produce approximately 75% of US gold output) is also the reagent that makes cyanide mining environmentally manageable: lime is added to mine tailings and waste streams to raise pH to levels where cyanide decomposes or can be recovered, and to precipitate metals from mine drainage. Lime is simultaneously the reagent that enables cyanide gold extraction AND the primary treatment chemical for the environmental hazards cyanide gold mining creates. A Graymont Western US lime supply disruption would simultaneously slow gold production at Nevada mines and degrade environmental compliance at the same mines' tailings management systems.
Graymont Limited ↗Origin2024
Graymont Limited was founded as a family business in British Columbia in the mid-20th century, building lime quarrying and kiln operations to serve British Columbia's pulp and paper industry (the largest industrial lime consumer in Canada) and the growing Western Canadian resource industries. Graymont expanded organically and through acquisitions into Alberta, the US West, Eastern Canada, and eventually New Zealand. In 2016, Bain Capital acquired a significant stake in Graymont from the founding family, bringing private equity capital for further expansion while the family retained ownership stake. This partial PE ownership distinguishes Graymont from Lhoist and Carmeuse, which remain purely family-controlled. Graymont's geographic focus on Western North America positions them uniquely to serve the mining industry (gold, silver, copper, potash) and Alberta oil sands — customers that the European lime majors (Lhoist, Carmeuse) do not have concentrated exposure to.
