Honeywell UOP LLC (Des Plaines, IL; subsidiary of Honeywell International) is the world's leading manufacturer of PSA-grade LiX zeolite molecular sieves for medical oxygen concentrators. UOP's OXYSIV product family — OXYSIV-5, OXYSIV-7, and OXYSIV MDX — are the dominant adsorbents specified by medical oxygen concentrator OEMs globally. Li-LSX (lithium low-silica X zeolite) has uniquely high nitrogen/oxygen selectivity enabling concentrators to produce >90% oxygen from air using pressure swing adsorption. UOP originated as Universal Oil Products Company (founded 1914); acquired by Allied Signal (later Honeywell) in 1988. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana zeolite synthesis plant is UOP's primary molecular sieve manufacturing facility. UOP's process catalyst and adsorbent business is also used in petroleum refining (FCC catalysts, hydroprocessing) — same zeolite synthesis infrastructure serves both medical oxygen and refinery applications.

    Honeywell UOP's OXYSIV zeolite product line is simultaneously (1) the critical adsorbent in home medical oxygen concentrators used by 2.5 million US COPD and pulmonary fibrosis patients, (2) the adsorbent in military OBOGS systems on F/A-18 Super Hornets, C-17 transport aircraft, and ground vehicle oxygen generators, and (3) a catalyst precursor feedstock for UOP's refinery zeolite catalysts used in fluid catalytic cracking. The same Des Plaines / Baton Rouge UOP infrastructure that synthesizes medical-grade OXYSIV also supplies zeolite to petroleum refiners for FCC catalyst production. This means that a surge in refinery catalyst demand (e.g., driven by gasoline production increases) could compete with medical zeolite production for UOP's synthesis capacity. Conversely, a medical oxygen surge (as in COVID-19) competes with both industrial nitrogen PSA and military OBOGS supply from the same UOP production lines. Honeywell, a defense contractor with classified government contracts, manages allocation across these competing uses — allocation decisions at one company in Baton Rouge, Louisiana determine the global medical oxygen, military oxygen, and petroleum refining adsorbent supply simultaneously.

    Honeywell UOP (Universal Oil Products) was founded in 1914 in Chicago by Jesse Dubbs and his son Carbon Petroleum Dubbs — whose unusual name reflects his father's obsession with petroleum. The original UOP business was licensing the thermal cracking process for converting heavy oil to gasoline (the "Dubbs process"), collecting royalties from every refinery that used the technology. Standard Oil and other major refiners paid UOP royalties for access to better refinery chemistry. UOP pioneered catalytic reforming (Platforming process, 1949) and fluid catalytic cracking additives, becoming the licensing engine behind the modern petroleum refinery. Allied Signal acquired UOP in 1988; Honeywell (which merged with Allied Signal in 1999) inherited UOP's refinery technology and catalyst business. The OXYSIV zeolite medical oxygen business was built on top of UOP's existing molecular sieve capability — the same zeolite synthesis infrastructure that made FCC catalyst additives for refineries was adapted to produce lithium-exchanged zeolite for medical oxygen concentrators.
