The most numerous component in modern electronics is not a chip — it is the MLCC, the grain-of-sand-sized multilayer ceramic capacitor. A single smartphone contains on the order of a thousand of them; a modern car, ten thousand or more; an AI server board, many thousands. And the global supply sits with just a few makers — Murata, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Taiyo Yuden, TDK and Yageo (which owns KEMET). When MLCC supply tightened in 2018, electronics manufacturers across phones, cars and industrial gear were thrown into allocation simultaneously, because no board ships without its full complement of these cents-apiece parts. It is the clearest case of a trivially cheap, invisible component being a systemic chokepoint for the entire electronics economy.

KEMET turned a capacitor business into a conflict-minerals transparency pioneer. Tantalum — the metal in high-density tantalum capacitors — is refined partly from coltan mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes region, a designated conflict mineral. KEMET built a mine-to-capacitor traceability program (its "conflict-free" tantalum sourcing initiative, including direct engagement with verified Central African mines) years before it was common practice. So the AI and server boom's appetite for tantalum capacitors rides on a provenance and chain-of-custody system created by a component maker — a capacitor company that became, by necessity, an authority on responsible mineral sourcing in a conflict zone.
