  • Did you know2019

In 2019, German family company Knauf spent $7 billion to acquire USG Corporation — combining the world's second- and third-largest gypsum companies into the world's largest. The Knauf family had been quietly accumulating a 10%+ stake in USG for years before launching the acquisition. The resulting company controls the most important gypsum quarry network in North America and a global wallboard manufacturing empire. Knauf is privately held by the Knauf family of Iphofen, Bavaria, with no public disclosure requirements — making the world's largest gypsum company entirely opaque to supply chain monitoring.

  • Origin2023

Knauf Group was founded by brothers Karl and Alfons Knauf in Iphofen, Bavaria in 1932, initially producing gypsum plaster from local Franconian gypsum deposits. The company remained a tightly-held family business through postwar West German reconstruction — a period when demand for plasterboard for rapid low-cost housing was explosive. It expanded eastward into former East Germany immediately after reunification in 1990, then aggressively into Russia and Eastern Europe, before acquiring USG Corporation (the US's largest drywall maker) for $7 billion in 2019 to become the undisputed global leader.
