Producer
Kronos Worldwide, Inc.
American titanium dioxide (TiO2) manufacturer (NYSE: KRO, HQ Dallas TX; Contran Corporation/Harold Simmons family ~85% ownership; ~$1.8B revenue); operates TiO2 plants in the US (Savannah GA, Hamilton Mississippi), Germany (Leverkusen, Uerdingen), Belgium (Langerbrugge), and Norway (Fredrikstad) using the sulfate process. The sulfate process for TiO2 production generates large volumes of ferrous sulfate (FeSO4·7H2O, 'copperas') as an unavoidable byproduct — for every tonne of TiO2 produced via sulfate process, approximately 4-6 tonnes of ferrous sulfate are generated. Kronos purifies and sells food-grade ferrous sulfate to pharmaceutical and infant formula manufacturers. This creates a remarkable supply chain relationship: the iron supplement in infant formula is a byproduct of making white paint pigment (TiO2 is the primary white pigment in all white paints). When Kronos's TiO2 production is curtailed (construction downturn, housing slump), ferrous sulfate supply to infant formula manufacturers falls in lockstep, regardless of infant formula demand. TiO2 and infant iron nutrition share the same production bottleneck.

The iron supplement in infant formula and the white pigment in house paint are coupled through the same production process at Kronos Worldwide. Kronos uses the sulfate process for TiO2 production: titanium ore is dissolved in sulfuric acid, TiO2 is precipitated and calcined, and the remaining solution contains ferrous sulfate. For every tonne of TiO2 (white paint pigment), approximately 4-6 tonnes of ferrous sulfate are generated as unavoidable byproduct. Kronos purifies this ferrous sulfate to food grade and sells it to infant formula manufacturers. This means that Kronos's TiO2 production rate -- which responds to construction activity, housing starts, and industrial coating demand -- determines the supply of ferrous sulfate available for infant formula iron supplementation, regardless of infant formula demand. During the 2022-2023 construction slowdown (when housing starts fell 20%+), Kronos curtailed TiO2 production -- and simultaneously reduced ferrous sulfate supply to infant formula manufacturers. The construction industry's cycle determines infant nutrition iron supply availability. No infant formula manufacturer's procurement team independently monitors housing start data as an input to iron supplement supply risk.
Kronos Worldwide, Inc. ↗Origin2023
Kronos Worldwide was built by Harold Simmons, the Dallas Texas billionaire who acquired NL Industries (formerly National Lead Company, which had divested from lead manufacturing under lead paint regulations) and transformed it into a TiO2 producer. Kronos operates the sulfate process TiO2 route, which was the original industrial TiO2 manufacturing method (developed in the early 20th century, patented before the chloride process). The sulfate process treats titanium-containing ilmenite or slag with sulfuric acid, dissolves the titanium and iron together, then selectively precipitates TiO2 while the iron remains in solution as ferrous sulfate. The sulfate process is energy-intensive and generates more waste than the chloride process (which Tronox and Chemours use), but produces a ferrous sulfate byproduct that has commercial value. Kronos's Harold Simmons built a $10B+ fortune primarily from controlling the white pigment in every white paint can in North America and Europe. When Simmons died in 2013, his estate -- through Contran Corporation -- still controls ~85% of Kronos. Kronos is one of the few major public companies where a single family estate controls 85% of a company with NYSE listing and $1.8B in revenue.
