Lennox International traces its founding to 1895 in Marshalltown, Iowa, where Davey Lennox invented the sectional steel furnace — a furnace assembled from riveted sheet metal panels that could be carried in pieces through narrow basement doors and assembled in place, unlike the single-piece cast iron furnaces of the era. The innovation was practical rather than scientific: American homes were being built with tight basement access that could not accommodate whole-unit furnace delivery. Lennox's sectional design solved a logistics problem. The company remained in Marshalltown throughout the 20th century and today is one of the largest private employers in Marshall County, Iowa (population ~39,000). The same Marshalltown factory complex that started with sheet metal furnaces in 1895 now produces R-454B heat pump systems ahead of AIM Act refrigerant mandates — a 130-year evolution of the same Iowa sheet metal manufacturing heritage.
