LSB Industries produces both anhydrous ammonia (fertilizer and refrigerant) and nitric acid — the two-step combination that creates ammonium nitrate, which is simultaneously the world's most widely used nitrogen fertilizer and the primary explosive in commercial mining, quarrying, and construction (ANFO: ammonium nitrate/fuel oil). At LSB's El Dorado, Arkansas plant, ammonia and nitric acid are combined to make ammonium nitrate solution that is sold both to agricultural blenders (as fertilizer) and to explosives companies (Dyno Nobel, Orica, AEL) for ANFO and emulsion explosive manufacturing. The same LSB production facility feeds the Midwest's farm fields with nitrogen and supplies the commercial explosives that blast copper ore in Arizona mines, remove overburden at coal mines in Wyoming, and demolish concrete in urban construction.
