  • Did you know2024

The same material joins the copper pipes in your walls and the chips on your phone's motherboard: lead-free solder. MacDermid Alpha's Alpha brand is the leading global maker of electronics solder — the paste and alloy that attaches essentially every component to every printed circuit board — and the lead-free SAC chemistry family also serves plumbing joints. So a single company's solder sits beneath both the plumbing supply chain and all of electronics assembly, two industries that would never be analyzed together. Underneath it all is tin: solder is mostly tin, a metal with its own concentrated and partly conflict-affected mine supply, making the humble solder joint a quiet pinch point common to construction and electronics alike.

  • Concentration2024

Beyond solder, MacDermid Alpha supplies much of the "joining and plating" chemistry that turns bare boards and chips into working assemblies — solder paste and flux, PCB and semiconductor-packaging plating, and final-finish surface treatments. This materials-and-chemistry layer (shared with Indium Corporation, Henkel, Senju and a few others) is far less visible than the chips themselves but equally necessary: a processor that cannot be soldered down or whose board cannot be plated is useless. The assembly-materials tier is concentrated in a short list of specialists, making it a single point of dependency sitting between component manufacture and a finished electronic product.
