Martin Marietta Materials is the sibling company of Lockheed Martin — both were created from the same parent corporation. The original Martin Marietta Corporation (founded 1961 from Glenn L. Martin Company + American-Marietta Corporation) was a diversified conglomerate making rocket systems, cement, and aggregates. In 1993, the construction materials division was spun off as Martin Marietta Materials (NYSE: MLM) to focus Martin Marietta Corporation on defense and aerospace. In 1995, Martin Marietta Corporation merged with Lockheed to form Lockheed Martin — the world's largest defense contractor. The quarrying company (Martin Marietta Materials) and the F-35 manufacturer (Lockheed Martin) share a corporate grandparent (the Marietta family of Maryland industrial companies) and identical name origins, but are now entirely separate public companies with no operational relationship. The same 1961 conglomerate that built Titan rockets and produced cement became both the builder of next-generation fighter jets and the second-largest US road gravel company.
