Military connector specifications (MIL-DTL-24308, MIL-C-39029) frequently require beryllium copper for its unique combination of spring strength, conductivity, and corrosion resistance — properties no beryllium-free alloy fully replicates. The Elmore, Ohio facility is the only commercial beryllium hydroxide production site in the Western Hemisphere. A single plant in rural Ohio is the chokepoint for specialty connector strip used in fighter jet avionics, submarine sonar systems, missile guidance, and satellite communications. Any disruption to Elmore (fire, earthquake, regulatory closure) would have no immediate domestic substitute for defense-grade CuBe connector strip.

Materion Corporation's history traces to the Brush family name — specifically to the relationship between Cleveland inventor Charles Francis Brush and the beryllium chemicals industry. Charles Francis Brush (1849-1929) invented the arc lamp (the first practical electric streetlight, 1879) and developed the first commercial generator for electric power distribution, making Cleveland the first US city with electric street lighting. Brush's electrical company (Brush Electric Company) merged into Thomson-Houston, which became General Electric — but separate Brush family industrial ventures eventually led to beryllium chemical operations. Brush Wellman (the direct predecessor to Materion) was incorporated in 1931 specifically to process beryllium from the Spor Mountain, Utah ore deposits — the world's richest known beryllium deposits. Materion thus traces from an arc lamp inventor's industrial legacy through beryllium chemistry to become the Western Hemisphere's dominant beryllium copper alloy producer for defense and aerospace.
