    Nippon Electric Glass (NEG) was founded in 1949 in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture — initially established by the newly postwar Japanese government-backed plan to develop domestic glass manufacturing for television cathode-ray tube (CRT) glass. CRT television glass (high-lead glass for radiation shielding in the display panel) required precision glass manufacturing not yet available in Japan at the time. NEG's CRT glass business made it the dominant Japanese TV glass manufacturer through the analog television era. When flat panel displays (LCD, then OLED) replaced CRTs, NEG pivoted to liquid crystal display substrate glass. In December 2025, NEG launched what it claims is the world's first mass production pharmaceutical glass tubing using an all-electric melting furnace at a new facility in Selangor, Malaysia. The all-electric process reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 90% compared to conventional gas-fired furnaces AND eliminates arsenic (a traditional glass fining agent) from pharmaceutical glass — addressing both environmental and pharmaceutical safety requirements. A Japanese television glass company's technology pivot to electric furnace pharmaceutical glass in Malaysia serves the GLP-1 obesity drug cartridge market.
