The Magnequench bonded NdFeB magnetic powder technology was developed at General Motors Research in 1984, commercialized by GM, and then controversially sold in 1995 to a Chinese consortium (Sextant Group, partially linked to the Chinese government) for approximately $70M. The sale — which transferred both the technology and the US production facility — later became a subject of congressional and national security scrutiny as China's rare earth magnet industry expanded. The Magnequench IP and business were eventually restructured out of Chinese ownership into what became Neo Performance Materials.
