  • Did you know2022

onsemi's automotive image sensor business (AR0820 and Hyperlux sensor family) makes it a simultaneous supplier to two automotive technology revolutions that rarely appear in the same supply chain analysis: EV power electronics (SiC chips for motor drives and charging) and autonomous driving perception (CMOS image sensors for camera-based ADAS). A vehicle with onsemi SiC inverters also contains onsemi camera sensors in its surround-view system — the same semiconductor company is in both the drivetrain and the safety perception stack. This is not a coincidence: onsemi positioned itself specifically to serve the "electrification + autonomy" package because automotive OEMs developing both systems simultaneously prefer fewer, larger semiconductor suppliers who can serve both applications. onsemi's image sensors compete with Sony Semiconductor Solutions (the dominant automotive camera sensor supplier) and OmniVision for ADAS camera sockets — a different market segment from SiC power but enabled by the same automotive-grade semiconductor manufacturing and qualification infrastructure.

  • Origin2022

onsemi (NASDAQ: ON), rebranded from ON Semiconductor in 2021 as part of a strategic pivot toward the "intelligent power and sensing" market, is a Motorola semiconductor spin-off (1999) that transformed itself from a commodity analog semiconductor company into one of the leading SiC power device competitors. Under CEO Hassane El-Khoury (who joined from Lattice Semiconductor in 2021), onsemi undertook an aggressive portfolio restructuring: selling non-core product lines, eliminating approximately 10,000 jobs, and concentrating capital on automotive SiC power semiconductors and automotive image sensors — the two fastest-growing semiconductor markets tied to vehicle electrification and ADAS. The pivot was validated when onsemi signed multi-year supply agreements with BMW, Volkswagen Group, and BYD for SiC chips worth billions of dollars, and its stock price approximately tripled between 2021 and 2022. onsemi's strategy of vertically integrating SiC substrate production (growing its own SiC boules rather than buying from Wolfspeed or Coherent) is a direct response to the 2021-2023 SiC substrate supply shortage that constrained every SiC device maker — a vertical integration decision that requires years of capital investment and yield learning before it pays off.
