O-I Glass is publicly known for wine and beer bottles, but the US has effectively only two major domestic glass container manufacturers: O-I and Ardagh Group (Irish, NYSE: ARD). Together they supply roughly 90% of US glass containers for wine, spirits, beer, food, and OTC pharmaceutical packaging. No significant new glass furnace capacity has been added in the US in over 30 years — building a new glass furnace requires hundreds of millions of dollars, 3-5 years of construction, and has no market for commodity glass that could cover these costs. When COVID-19 supply chain disruptions hit in 2020-2021, glass bottle shortages affected simultaneously: wine bottling at US wineries, craft beer bottling, and hot sauce/condiment manufacturers who could not obtain glass jars. An O-I or Ardagh disruption would simultaneously constrain beverage packaging, food packaging, and OTC pharmaceutical packaging in the US — all dependent on the same silica sand + soda ash + cullet glass manufacturing process at functionally the same two companies.

Owens-Illinois was founded in 1903 in Toledo, Ohio by Michael Owens, who had invented the first practical automatic glass blowing machine that same year. Before Owens' invention, glass bottles were blown by human glassblowers — a skilled labor bottleneck that limited production. Owens' rotary automatic bottle machine could produce 2,500 bottles per hour versus 15-20 hand-blown by a skilled artisan. This invention reduced glass bottle cost by over 80% and made mass-market packaged food and beverages economically viable: before automatic glass, Heinz ketchup, Coca-Cola, and prescription medicine bottles were expensive luxury items. O-I grew through acquisitions to become the world's largest glass container company. Their glass furnaces are continuous-operation facilities: a glass furnace cannot be temporarily shut down (molten glass would solidify and destroy the furnace). This means O-I has operated 24/7/365 production for over 120 years — the industrial equivalent of a nuclear reactor that cannot be switched off.
