The HDPE pipe that Performance Pipe extrudes for natural gas utility distribution (yellow jacket, PE4710 grade, meeting ASTM F714) and the HDPE pipe for municipal potable water mains (blue stripe, AWWA C901/C906 rated) are manufactured on the same extrusion lines using the same Marlex HDPE base resin, with identical physical dimensions and pressure ratings — differentiated only by color coding, antioxidant package, and UV stabilizer selection. A utility facing simultaneous natural gas main replacement needs and water infrastructure replacement can source both pipe types from the same manufacturer's same production line. During the 2021-2022 resin shortage, when HDPE resin supply disrupted multiple pipeline replacement programs simultaneously, natural gas utilities and water utilities competed for the same pipe production capacity from the same plants — gas infrastructure renewal and water infrastructure renewal share a single polyethylene resin and pipe manufacturing supply chain.
Performance Pipe (Chevron Phillips Chemical) ↗Origin2024
Performance Pipe is a division of Chevron Phillips Chemical Company (CPChem) — a 50/50 joint venture between Chevron Corporation and Phillips 66 that is one of the world's largest producers of ethylene and polyethylene. The corporate lineage: Phillips Petroleum (which merged with Conoco in 2002 to form ConocoPhillips, then spun off Phillips 66 in 2012) and Chevron each contributed their chemical businesses to form CPChem in 2000. CPChem is vertically integrated from natural gas feedstock (ethane cracking) to HDPE resin production to finished pipe: Performance Pipe extrudes CPChem's own Marlex HDPE resin into the pipes it sells. The same natural gas that Performance Pipe's HDPE pipe distributes to homes is also the feedstock (ethane) that CPChem cracks to make the HDPE resin that Performance Pipe extrudes into that same distribution pipe — the company's product is literally made from the same commodity it distributes.
