Edgetech's Super Spacer warm-edge IGU spacer is a silicone foam matrix that contains integrated molecular sieve desiccant — the same zeolite molecular sieve material used in industrial nitrogen generation plants, medical oxygen concentrators, natural gas pipeline dehydration, and pharmaceutical blister pack humidity control. When Edgetech manufactures the Super Spacer, they embed molecular sieve (3Å or 4Å zeolite) crystals into the silicone foam to absorb residual moisture from the sealed double-pane window cavity — preventing the fogging that occurs when internal moisture condenses on the inner glass surfaces. The identical molecular sieve material sourced from the same zeolite manufacturers (UOP/Honeywell, Zeochem, CECA/Arkema) simultaneously flows into: Edgetech window spacers (building construction), medical oxygen concentrators used in hospitals and home healthcare (pressure swing adsorption O₂ generation), onboard nitrogen generation for aircraft fuel inerting systems (aviation safety), and industrial gas processing facilities. A shortage of pharmaceutical- or industrial-grade molecular sieve zeolite would simultaneously affect energy-efficient window manufacturing, medical oxygen supply, and aviation fuel system safety.

  • Concentration2023

As building energy codes in the US (IECC) and Europe (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive) increasingly mandate warm-edge IGU spacers for new construction and replacement windows, the warm-edge spacer market is shifting from optional premium upgrade to regulatory requirement. Edgetech/Quanex holds approximately 35% of the warm-edge market with four main competitors (Swisspacer, TGI, Thermix, foam tape systems). However, the US residential window replacement market — approximately 50-55 million windows annually — is itself highly concentrated among a handful of fabricators (Andersen, Pella, PGT, Jeld-Wen) who each source spacer systems from one or two approved suppliers per product line. Quanex sells to the window fabricators (B2B), not directly to homebuilders, meaning that Quanex's effective revenue concentration is highest in the handful of large US window fabricators — and those fabricators in turn have multi-year supply agreements with Quanex that are difficult to re-source quickly if Edgetech had a production disruption at its Cambridge, Ohio manufacturing facility.

  • Origin2024

Quanex's identity as a window component company is the product of a full industrial transformation. The company began as Quanex Corporation, a specialty steel tube and bar manufacturer in Houston, producing hollow steel sections for the automotive and HVAC industries. Facing commodity steel margin pressure, Quanex divested its steel operations in 2008 and reincorporated as Quanex Building Products, pivoting entirely into fenestration (windows and doors) components. The new Quanex acquired Edgetech I.G. (makers of the Super Spacer warm-edge IGU system) as its core technology platform, then expanded through acquisitions of screen, weatherstrip, and cabinet component manufacturers. In 2024, Quanex completed the ~£788M acquisition of Tyman plc (London-listed), one of the largest window and door hardware companies in the UK and Europe — transforming a former Texas steel tuber into one of the world's largest pure-play window and door component suppliers. A company that was once part of the automotive steel supply chain is now a critical supplier to the building construction industry's energy efficiency retrofit wave.
