Rommelag bottelpack BFS machines produce unit-dose ophthalmic vials (artificial tears, antibiotic eye drops, glaucoma medications) and unit-dose respiratory ampoules (albuterol/salbutamol, ipratropium, budesonide for nebulizer inhalation) on the same production equipment — the machine design, the resin (typically LDPE), and the aseptic filling process are identical; only the fill volume, container shape, and drug formulation differ. A pharmaceutical contract manufacturer running a Rommelag Type 460 machine can switch between producing eye drop ampoules and asthma nebulizer ampoules in the same production campaign, constrained only by cleaning validation and regulatory authorization. During the early COVID-19 pandemic (March-April 2020), albuterol nebulizer ampoule demand surged (nebulizers were being used for respiratory COVID treatment), simultaneously with demand for sterile saline ampoules. There are no Chinese, Indian, or emerging-market BFS machine manufacturers with FDA-approved equivalents for pharmaceutical applications. The entire global unit-dose ophthalmic pharmaceutical supply chain (artificial tears from Allergan/AbbVie, Refresh, Systane; prescription eye drops from Alcon, Bausch+Lomb) and the entire global unit-dose respiratory nebulizer supply chain (albuterol from Nephron, Akorn, Perrigo; budesonide from AstraZeneca; ipratropium from Boehringer Ingelheim) run through machines that are predominantly Rommelag-manufactured. A private family company in Waiblingen, Germany controls the machine supply for pharmaceutical products used by hundreds of millions of asthma, COPD, and dry-eye patients daily — with no credible substitute machine manufacturer, no US or EU domestic alternative, and no clear succession plan for family ownership transition.

Rommelag Group was founded by Heinrich Rommelag, a German engineer from Waiblingen, Baden-Württemberg (in the Stuttgart metropolitan area) who invented the blow-fill-seal (BFS) packaging process in the 1960s — an innovation that enabled pharmaceutical liquids to be filled into sterile plastic containers in a continuous, closed process without human operators touching the product or container. Rommelag's insight was to combine the industrial blow-molding process (used for making plastic bottles) with pharmaceutical-grade sterile filling in a single integrated machine: resin pellets enter, sterile ampoules of filled pharmaceutical product exit. The "bottelpack" system Rommelag developed became the global standard for unit-dose pharmaceutical liquid packaging. Today, approximately 60-70% of all unit-dose pharmaceutical liquids worldwide — including virtually all single-use eye drops, all unit-dose respiratory nebulizer solutions, and much of the world's sterile saline and irrigation fluid — are produced on Rommelag bottelpack machines or equivalent BFS machines. A private, family-owned German engineering company from the Stuttgart suburbs built the infrastructure that delivers sterile medication doses to billions of people daily.
