Capacity2023
SECOP's specialization in R600a (isobutane) refrigerant compressors positions it as a direct beneficiary of EU F-gas regulations and global refrigerant phase-down policy. Isobutane (R600a) has a GWP of 3 compared to R134a (GWP 1430), making it the dominant refrigerant for EU household refrigerators since the early 2010s. Unlike R410A → R454B transition in HVAC (complex chemistry), the household refrigerator transition to R600a was completed earlier in Europe. SECOP's R600a platform is a mature, EU-compliant default for European white goods. As developing markets (India, Southeast Asia, Latin America) face their own HFC phase-down timelines under the Kigali Amendment (to the Montreal Protocol), R600a adoption will expand — meaning SECOP's existing platform technology has export potential to emerging markets transitioning from R134a. A small Bavarian/Slovak compressor company with specialized R600a expertise is a technology exporter to the global refrigerant transition.
Secop GmbH ↗Origin2023
SECOP GmbH was formerly the compressor division of Danfoss A/S — the Danish industrial conglomerate (founded 1933) known for heating controls, refrigeration valves, drives, and power electronics. Danfoss divested its compressor division in 2014 to Aurelius Equity Opportunities SE (Munich-based German private equity) because the compressor business had insufficient scale to compete against Embraco (Brazil/Nidec) and Chinese producers. Danfoss preferred to focus on the higher-margin refrigeration controls business (electronic expansion valves, thermostats, frequency drives) while exiting the manufactured goods segment. The SECOP divestiture illustrates a recurring pattern in European industrial equipment: European firms that were once vertically integrated (from compressors to controls) have progressively divested hardware manufacturing to maintain margins in controls and software. Danfoss retained the pressure-controls, electronic expansion valves, and inverter drives that SECOP's compressors plug into — so SECOP's compressors still often pair with Danfoss controls in European refrigeration system design.
