    Sensata's Gigavac high-voltage DC contactors — originally designed for EV battery pack isolation (disconnecting the high-voltage battery for safety) — use the same sealed DC arc-quench contactor design as the contactors in military hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) drivetrains, grid-scale energy storage systems (ESS), and utility-scale UPS (uninterruptible power supply) installations. A high-voltage DC contactor must safely interrupt 400-1000VDC at hundreds of amperes — a challenging DC arc quenching problem that Gigavac solved with sealed hermetic contacts filled with hydrogen gas (which is better than air at quenching DC arcs). The EV battery contactor that every Tesla, GM Ultium-platform vehicle, and Volkswagen MEB vehicle uses for battery disconnection safety draws from the same Gigavac product family as the contactors in US Army hybrid vehicle prototypes and grid-scale lithium-ion battery farms.

    Sensata Technologies was the Sensors & Controls business unit of Texas Instruments (TI) until 2006, when Bain Capital acquired it for $3B in a leveraged buyout. Texas Instruments — known for calculators, DSP chips, and analog semiconductors — had operated a large automotive and industrial sensors division for decades, which was adjacent to but distinct from TI's core semiconductor business. Bain Capital rebranded the business as Sensata and took it public on NYSE in 2010. The tire pressure monitoring sensor that is mandated in every new US vehicle under the TREAD Act (Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability, and Documentation Act of 2000, spurred by the 1999-2001 Firestone/Ford Explorer rollover crisis) uses Sensata technology in a significant portion of the US fleet — a $3B private equity carve-out from Texas Instruments became a federally mandated supply chain component because Congress passed safety legislation that created permanent automotive sensor demand.
