    PVP is a critical pore-forming additive in the manufacture of hollow fiber membranes used in water filtration, dialysis, and gas separation. Ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF) membranes for water purification, kidney dialysis cartridges, and virus filtration in biopharmaceutical manufacturing are produced by phase-inversion casting of polymer solutions containing PVP as a pore-forming agent — the PVP leaches out during membrane formation, leaving controlled porosity. Shanghai Qifuqing's PVP is simultaneously a pharmaceutical tablet binder and the pore-forming agent in the membrane that cleans dialysis patients' blood and in the filtration membranes purifying drinking water in municipal water treatment plants. A PVP supply disruption would affect pharmaceutical manufacturing, kidney dialysis machine supply chain, and the water purification membranes serving municipal water infrastructure — through a single polymer's role as a pore-former across industries.

    Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was invented in 1939 by Walter Reppe at BASF in Germany. During World War II, BASF developed injectable PVP (branded Periston) as a synthetic blood plasma substitute for German military wounded on the Eastern Front — where plasma supplies from blood donations could not keep pace with battlefield casualties. PVP dissolved in saline could be administered IV as a temporary plasma volume expander, buying time for blood transfusion. After WWII, the Allies captured the BASF PVP patents (part of German chemical IP seized under war reparations) and American pharmaceutical companies including ISP (International Specialty Products, formerly GAF) commercialized PVP for pharmaceutical tablets and personal care. Chinese producers including Shanghai Qifuqing entered the market decades later through reverse-engineering and scale-up, eventually capturing majority global market share. A molecule invented to keep Nazi soldiers alive on the Eastern Front is now manufactured in Shanghai and used to hold aspirin tablets together.
