  • Origin2023

Sibanye-Stillwater operates the Marikana PGM complex in Rustenburg, South Africa — acquired when Sibanye purchased Lonmin plc in 2019 for approximately USD 285 million. Marikana was the site of the August 2012 Marikana massacre: South African Police Service killed 34 striking platinum miners at Lonmin's Marikana mine in a single day, the largest killing of South African civilians by state forces since the apartheid era. The miners had been striking for higher wages (demanding ZAR 12,500/month vs. the ZAR 4,000-5,000 they were receiving) in protest against what they considered inadequate pay from one of the world's largest platinum companies. The Marikana massacre triggered a wave of wildcat strikes across South Africa's platinum and gold mining sectors and permanently elevated the AMCU (Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union) as a political force. Sibanye acquired the mine and its labor relations legacy. The company now operates the site under continued AMCU pressure — Sibanye has faced multiple lengthy platinum and gold mine strikes since 2019. The global automotive industry's platinum supply chain runs through a mine site that became synonymous with the most violent episode of South African mine labor history since apartheid.

  • Did you know2023

Sibanye-Stillwater (Weltevreden Park, South Africa; NYSE: SBSW) is the only company that operates PGM mines on two separate continents simultaneously: the Bushveld Complex in South Africa (where it acquired Lonmin Marikana assets after the 2012 massacre and subsequent years of financial distress) and the Stillwater Complex in Montana, USA (acquired in 2017 for $2.2B — the highest-value mining acquisition in US history at the time). Sibanye-Stillwater is the world's largest primary palladium producer. Its Montana Stillwater and East Boulder mines are located in the Beartooth Mountains — one of the most remote and geologically complex mining environments in North America, with ore-bearing rocks that are 2.7 billion years old (older than the Bushveld's 2 billion years). Sibanye-Stillwater has expanded further into battery metals (lithium, nickel) — the same South African company that operates the only two significant PGM mines in the Western world is also building a position in the battery metals supply chain for electric vehicles.

  • Concentration2023

The Stillwater Mine and East Boulder Mine in Montana's Beartooth Mountains — operated by South Africa's Sibanye-Stillwater — are the United States' only significant platinum group metal (PGM) mines and the only major PGM operations in the Western Hemisphere outside South Africa. The ore body, called the J-M (Johns-Manville) Reef, is a 28-mile-long ultra-mafic intrusion containing palladium and platinum in a 3:1 ratio — the inverse of South African Bushveld ore, which is platinum-dominant. The Stillwater deposit was discovered by Johns-Manville Corporation geologists in 1967; the Stillwater Mining Company was formed in 1986 to develop it. Sibanye (a South African gold miner) acquired Stillwater Mining in 2017 for $2.2 billion — bringing one of the world's few non-Russian, non-South-African PGM mines under South African ownership. The Stillwater complex produces ~550,000-600,000 ounces of palladium per year — approximately 4% of global supply. Every US catalytic converter manufacturer that seeks non-Russian palladium supply has exactly one domestic US source: a Montana mountain range mine owned by a South African company. In February 2026, the US International Trade Commission and Commerce Department issued affirmative antidumping and countervailing duty determinations against Russian-origin palladium, validating the competitive threat Nornickel's state-subsidized production posed to Sibanye-Stillwater.
