Skyworks operates a GaAs compound semiconductor fabrication facility in Newbury Park, California — one of the very few remaining US-soil commercial-scale GaAs fabs in operation. The Newbury Park fab produces GaAs HBT wafers for Skyworks' own mobile RF products. This domestic fab is strategically significant: it provides partial insulation from Taiwan supply chain risk (WIN Semiconductors is also a Skyworks foundry partner) and enables Skyworks to retain classified defense compound semiconductor work that cannot be processed at foreign foundries. Most US GaAs manufacturing has migrated to Taiwan; Skyworks' Newbury Park fab is one of the last significant onshore compound semiconductor manufacturing assets in the US.

Skyworks was formed in 2002 through the merger of Alpha Industries (Woburn MA — a GaAs foundry and RF component maker) and Conexant Systems' wireless division (a spin-off from Rockwell International's semiconductor business). Both predecessors were mid-tier RF components companies; neither alone had the scale to compete with industry leaders. The combined Skyworks successfully positioned itself as Apple's primary cellular RF supplier around the 2010-2012 iPhone expansion, capturing Apple's RF socket at the moment smartphone volumes were scaling to hundreds of millions of units. Apple revenue grew to represent ~65% of Skyworks' total by FY2019 — making Skyworks one of the most concentrated large-cap semiconductor companies in terms of customer dependency. The $2.75B Silicon Labs I&A acquisition was an explicit diversification to reduce this concentration.
