    Primary Fuel Extraction & Production

    Depending on generation mix: natural gas is extracted from shale/conventional reservoirs via drilling and hydraulic fracturing; uranium is mined (open-pit or in-situ leaching) and milled to uranium oxide (yellowcake); coal is surface or underground mined; sunlight and wind require no fuel extraction but require manufactured equipment. In 2024, ~43% of US electricity came from natural gas, 20% nuclear, 20% renewable (wind+solar), 16% coal.

    Fuel Processing & Enrichment

    Natural gas is processed to pipeline-grade quality (>95% methane) at gas processing plants that remove water, CO2, H2S, and NGLs. Uranium yellowcake undergoes conversion to UF6, then uranium enrichment (centrifuge or gaseous diffusion) to increase U-235 from 0.7% to 3–5% (LEU). Polysilicon is purified to 9N (99.9999999%) via Siemens or fluidized bed reactor (FBR) processes. Solar panel modules and wind turbines are manufactured in separate supply chains.

    Power Generation

    Fuels are burned in thermal plants (combined-cycle gas turbines, coal boilers, nuclear reactors) to produce steam that drives turbine-generators. Wind turbines convert kinetic energy via permanent magnet or doubly-fed induction generators. Solar PV converts photons to DC power via silicon cells. Each generation technology has distinct supply chains for equipment and consumables.

    Generator Step-Up Transmission

    Power plant output (11–25 kV) is stepped up to transmission voltage (115–765 kV) by generator step-up (GSU) transformers — large custom-built units weighing 100–400 tonnes with 1.5–4 year lead times. GSU transformers are critical single-point-of-failure infrastructure; the US had >90% import dependency for replacement units as of 2024.

    Bulk Power Transmission

    High-voltage alternating current (HVAC) transmission lines carry power at 115–765 kV over long distances. Conductors are aluminum conductor steel reinforced (ACSR) or aluminum conductor composite core (ACCC). Rights-of-way are maintained by investor-owned utilities (IOUs), cooperatives, and federal power agencies. HVDC lines increasingly used for very long distances (>500 miles) and offshore wind.

    Distribution Step-Down & Local Delivery

    Substation transformers step voltage down from transmission levels to distribution levels (4–35 kV), then pole-mounted or pad-mounted distribution transformers step down to household voltage (120/240V in the US). Distribution lines (overhead or underground) carry power to service connection points. The distribution system contains ~6 million miles of wire in the US.

    Advanced Metering & Consumption

    Smart meters (advanced metering infrastructure, AMI) record electricity consumption at 15-minute intervals and communicate usage to utilities via cellular, RF mesh, or PLC networks. AMI deployment enables demand response, outage detection, and dynamic pricing. The meter chipset supply chain is concentrated among Qualcomm, NXP, and STMicroelectronics; meter enclosure manufacturing shifted largely to China post-2005.

Together these four sites represent the world's largest concentration of uranium enrichment capacity under any single entity. Novouralsk feeds both domestic Russian fuel fabrication and TENEX export contracts (to US, European, and Asian utilities — now largely sanctioned/restricted post-2022).
