(Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada) in 1997 as part of IPSCO's EAF plate strategy, acquired by SSAB AB (Sweden) in 2008 when SSAB bought IPSCO for $7.7 billion, and now operated as SSAB Americas Inc. with Swedish corporate ownership. SSAB AB itself is partly owned by Swedish state pension funds (AP fonden). The mill uses an electric arc furnace fed by 92% recycled steel scrap, powered by MidAmerican Energy wind energy -- a carbon footprint positioning that has become commercially significant as European steel buyers face carbon border adjustment mechanisms. Hardox wear plate, the mill's flagship product, is sold under a proprietary brand with OEM certification programs (Hardox In My Body) that lock OEM customers into Hardox specifications -- a classic razor-and-blade model where the specification creates switching barriers.
