STL (Sterlite Technologies, Vedanta Group) operates India's only self-sufficient preform facility at Aurangabad — but Vedanta Group also owns Hindustan Zinc Ltd. and is a major global zinc and germanium producer through its Gamsberg mine in South Africa and Chanderiya smelter in Rajasthan. The parent conglomerate mines zinc (which by-produces germanium) in multiple countries, while the STL subsidiary manufactures optical fiber preforms that require germanium as a dopant. Vedanta Group is one of the few entities in the world that has upstream germanium mining capacity feeding into downstream preform manufacturing capacity — a vertical integration that spans geology to broadband.
