Sun Pharmaceutical Industries was founded in 1983 in Vadodara (Baroda), Gujarat by Dilip Shanghvi -- the son of a pharmaceutical distributor who started Sun Pharma with ₹10,000 (approximately $1,000 at 1983 exchange rates), five products, and a single employee. Sun Pharma's early growth came from psychiatric medications, an underserved therapeutic area in Indian generic pharmaceuticals. Shanghvi's strategy: identify therapeutic areas where generics were unavailable or underpriced in India, develop manufacturing capability, and distribute through the fragmented Indian medical representative network. The company grew through acquisitions including Caraco Pharmaceutical (US, 1997), Taro Pharmaceutical (Israel/Canada, 2010 after a hostile acquisition battle), and Ranbaxy Laboratories (India, 2014 for $4B -- the largest foreign M&A deal by an Indian pharma company at the time). Ranbaxy had been the largest Indian pharmaceutical company before massive FDA enforcement actions over data integrity at its Indian manufacturing sites.
