The tightest link sits between them: capacitor-grade tantalum powder, the ultra-pure, surface-engineered metal powder that actually stores the charge. Only a handful of companies in the world can make it to spec, and TANIOBIS — the former H.C. Starck tantalum/niobium business, now owned by Japan's JX — is the principal non-China Western producer.     The same tantalum that TANIOBIS turns into capacitor powder is also a biocompatible implant metal. Tantalum is exceptionally inert and bone-friendly, so tantalum powders are used to make orthopedic and dental implants and porous "trabecular" structures that bone grows directly into — increasingly via 3D printing of TANIOBIS spherical powders. So a single refractory-metal powder producer sits beneath both the electronics supply chain (capacitors) and the surgical-implant supply chain (hip cups, spinal cages, dental posts).
