Tata Chemicals is piloting Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) from its Wyoming trona mining brine — a potential connection between soda ash production and EV battery supply. Wyoming trona brine contains dissolved lithium at 30-50 mg/L concentration; the brine is pumped from underground, processed for soda ash, and currently re-injected. DLE technology (using selective sorbents or membranes) could extract lithium from the brine before re-injection — converting a glass raw material mining operation into a co-producer of battery-grade lithium. If commercial: the same Wyoming wellfield that produces soda ash for glass manufacturing would also produce lithium hydroxide for EV batteries. Separately, Tata Group's Jaguar Land Rover is one of the world's largest EV manufacturers — creating the possibility that Tata Chemicals Wyoming would supply lithium to Tata's own vehicle batteries, a full vertical integration from Wyoming brine to JLR EV.

Wyoming's Green River Basin natural trona soda ash operations are now predominantly controlled by non-US entities: WE Soda/Ciner Group (Turkish) controls ~45-50% of Wyoming capacity; Sisecam (Turkish) acquired 60% of WE Soda US in December 2024; OCI/Christison (Dutch/Saudi) controls another major block; and Tata Chemicals (Indian) operates its plant. Solvay (Belgian) also operates in Wyoming. The result: the world's largest single trona deposit — providing the primary raw material for US glass and detergent manufacturing — is operated primarily by Turkish, Dutch/Saudi, and Indian companies. Only Solvay (Belgian) represents a European-heritage operator. The strategic control of a critical US industrial mineral (soda ash) has quietly shifted to non-US hands through commercial acquisitions that drew little CFIUS or policy scrutiny because soda ash is not classified as a 'critical mineral' for national security purposes.

Tata Chemicals North America is the US soda ash subsidiary of Tata Chemicals Limited, itself part of India's Tata Group — a conglomerate founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868 that now spans steel, automotive (Jaguar Land Rover), IT (TCS), power, hotels, airlines, and chemicals across 100+ countries.
