TC Energy Corporation (Calgary AB; TSX/NYSE: TRP; ~CAD $15.2B revenue 2024) is one of North America's largest energy infrastructure companies, operating the NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) system — the primary natural gas pipeline grid serving Alberta and British Columbia. NGTL delivers natural gas to agricultural users in Alberta including grain dryer operators in the Peace River grain belt (northern Alberta) and central Alberta barley/canola growing regions. TC Energy also operates the Canadian Mainline connecting Alberta gas to Ontario/Quebec. TC Energy's NGTL system in Alberta delivers natural gas to three co-located but analytically separate demand centers: (1) LNG Canada and other LNG liquefaction projects on BC's Pacific coast, where gas is chilled for export to Asian power markets; (2) Alberta oil sands in-situ operations, which inject steam (generated from gas combustion) to mobilize bitumen — making the NGTL system a critical enabler of the world's most carbon-intensive oil production; and (3) Prairie grain dryers in Saskatchewan and Alberta that dry canola and wheat harvests. TC Energy's capacity allocation decisions simultaneously affect: Japan's LNG import security, Canadian oil sands production rates, and Prairie grain storage operations — three supply chains tracked in entirely different sectors but sharing the same Alberta pipeline grid.
TC Energy Corporation ↗Origin2023
TC Energy (formerly TransCanada Corporation) was established in 1951 to build the TransCanada Pipeline — a nation-building project connecting Alberta natural gas to Ontario and Quebec homes. The pipeline became the center of the famous Canadian "Pipeline Debate" of 1956: the St. Laurent Liberal government invoked closure to force the pipeline bill through Parliament, triggering the largest constitutional crisis in postwar Canadian history and contributing to the government's defeat in 1957. TC Energy subsequently grew through the NOVA acquisition (NGTL - Alberta gas grid) and acquisitions in the US (Columbia Gas Transmission) to become one of North America's largest natural gas infrastructure companies.
