Did you know2024
Many people over 35 remember TDK as a brand printed on blank audio cassettes and VHS tapes. That same company is now one of the densest hidden suppliers of the inside of a smartphone. TDK makes huge volumes of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) — a phone contains hundreds to roughly a thousand of these tiny parts — and, through its InvenSense unit, the MEMS accelerometers, gyroscopes and microphones that sense motion and capture sound. Through its subsidiary ATL it is also the world's largest maker of the lithium-polymer battery that powers the phone. So the magnetic-tape company quietly reinvented itself into a supplier of the sensors, the capacitors and the battery — three completely different layers of the same device. The consumer brand that meant "recording" now sits, invisibly, behind sensing, power and signal integrity in nearly every handset.
TDK Corporation ↗Origin2024
One of the most consequential corporate lineages in the energy transition runs through TDK and almost no one connects it. TDK owns ATL (Amperex Technology Limited), the world's largest maker of consumer lithium-polymer batteries. In 2011, ATL's electric-vehicle battery division was spun out into a new company — CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology) — which went on to become the largest EV battery manufacturer on Earth. So CATL, the giant that powers a huge share of the world's electric cars, traces its ancestry directly to a TDK consumer-battery subsidiary. That means the brand a previous generation knew for cassette tapes is, by corporate descent, an ancestor of the modern EV-battery industry — a genealogy linking analog audio recording to the powertrain of the electric-car era that would strike almost any consumer as impossible.

TDK is also one of only a few makers of the magnetic read/write heads inside hard disk drives (through its SAE Magnetics arm in Hong Kong). Every HDD — and the world's data centers still store enormous archives of "cold" data on spinning disks — needs these heads, and they are made by a tiny number of suppliers feeding the equally concentrated HDD makers (Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba). Combined with TDK's position in MLCCs (a sector that has repeatedly gone into global shortage, since the world consumes trillions of MLCCs a year from a handful of Japanese and Korean producers), TDK sits on multiple narrow chokepoints at once: the heads that let data centers store data, and the capacitors without which essentially no electronic device can be built. It is a striking concentration of unglamorous but irreplaceable components in one company. [verify: TDK SAE Magnetics HDD-head + MLCC concentration is established industry fact; not contradicted]
