Technoform's thermal break profiles — the polyamide (PA66 nylon 6,6) bars that thermally separate the interior and exterior sections of aluminum window and curtain wall frames in commercial buildings worldwide — are extruded from the same polymer feedstock used to make automotive engine air intake manifolds, car door handles, radiator end tanks, zip ties, toothbrush bristles, and parachute harnesses. PA66 nylon is produced from adipic acid (derived from cyclohexane, a petroleum refining byproduct) and hexamethylenediamine (HMD, produced from acrylonitrile or butadiene). The dominant PA66 producers — Invista (Koch Industries), Ascend Performance Materials (Halcyon Capital), Solvay, Lanxess — simultaneously supply: Technoform's window thermal breaks, the engine components in every BMW and Toyota, fishing line and nets, riot gear and ballistic panels, and industrial conveyor belts. A supply disruption in adipic acid production (most global adipic acid comes from five or six plants, primarily in the US, China, and Germany) would simultaneously stop window thermal break manufacturing, automotive underhood component production, and fishing industry supply chains.

Technoform and Ensinger GmbH (another German company) together supply the polyamide thermal break profiles for the majority of the world's aluminum window and curtain wall frame systems. The aluminum window market is itself highly concentrated among system suppliers — Schüco, WICONA (Hydro), Reynaers, Hueck, and ~10 others control the European commercial window specification market. These system suppliers each qualify one or two thermal break suppliers (typically Technoform or Ensinger) for each profile series. Because thermal break profiles are precision-extruded to tight cross-sectional tolerances specific to each window brand's die design, switching thermal break suppliers requires re-testing and re-certifying the window system against European energy and structural standards (EN 10077, EN 14351) — a 6-18 month process. The combination of profile-specific tooling lock-in and energy certification barriers makes Technoform's position in aluminum window supply chains highly sticky and difficult to displace even if a new entrant offered lower prices.

Technoform was founded in 1959 in Kassel, Germany as a precision plastics extrusion company. Their strategic pivot to building products came in the 1970s during the global energy crisis: the oil shocks of 1973 and 1979 created urgent demand for better thermal insulation in buildings, and architects began specifying aluminum window frame systems whose all-metal construction created severe thermal bridging (heat loss and interior condensation). Technoform developed the polyamide thermal break profile — an extruded glass-fiber-reinforced nylon bar that is pressed into the aluminum extrusion to thermally separate the interior and exterior aluminum sections — enabling aluminum windows to meet European energy codes. This product created a new product category and Technoform became the dominant supplier to Schüco, WICONA, Reynaers, and other aluminum window system manufacturers whose products now cover a significant fraction of European commercial glazing. Technoform's thermal break technology is now embedded in the facades of airports, office towers, and residential buildings across the world, all descended from a Kassel plastics company's response to the 1973 oil crisis.
