One of the most extreme single-geography chokepoints in all of technology is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains: Spruce Pine, North Carolina. The ultra-high-purity quartz mined there — by The Quartz Corp and Sibelco, essentially the only two producers — is melted into the fused-silica crucibles that hold molten silicon while monocrystalline silicon ingots are pulled in the Czochralski process. Those ingots are sliced into the wafers that become virtually every microchip and silicon solar cell on Earth. The crucible has to be purer than the silicon it contains, and no other deposit has been proven to deliver that purity at scale. So the entire global semiconductor and solar-PV industry rests on quartz from one Appalachian town — a dependency so concentrated that a serious disruption there (a flood, a fire, a labor or geopolitical event) would ripple into chip and solar production worldwide with multi-year lead times to recover.

The same Spruce Pine quartz underpins two supply chains usually treated as rivals for policy attention: computing and clean energy. Both semiconductors and solar photovoltaics rely on monocrystalline silicon grown in HPQ crucibles, so chips and solar panels literally share a common rock. The Quartz Corp's HPQ also feeds fused-silica optics and the optical-fiber preforms behind telecom. That makes one rare mineral deposit a shared foundation of the AI/computing buildout, the solar-energy transition, and the fiber-optic internet at once — three "future" industries quietly converging on the geology of a single North Carolina mining district.
