Tianma Microelectronics — China's second-largest display company by laptop panel market share and a major notebook LCD supplier — is ultimately owned by AVIC (China Aviation Industry Corporation), China's state aerospace and defense conglomerate that designs and manufactures military aircraft including the J-20 stealth fighter, H-6 bomber, and Y-20 transport. AVIC holds Tianma through its civilian electronics subsidiary Shenzhen CATIC Industries. The same TFT-LCD (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) production technology and process knowledge used to manufacture laptop panels at Tianma's Shanghai and Wuhan fabs is directly applicable to the hardened, high-brightness cockpit display panels used in Chinese military aviation. TFT-LCD is the underlying technology for avionics Multi-Function Displays (MFDs), Head-Up Display (HUD) driving systems, and weapons guidance display interfaces. Tianma Microelectronics was established in Shenzhen in 1983, initially as a small TFT-LCD manufacturer for industrial and specialty applications. The company came under the control of AVIC (China Aviation Industry Corporation) — China's state-owned defense aerospace conglomerate that also manufactures fighter jets, helicopters, and military avionics. AVIC's ownership of Tianma gives a Chinese defense-industrial enterprise direct control over a display maker that serves both civilian electronics supply chains (laptop panels for Lenovo, HP, Dell) AND avionics displays for Chinese military and commercial aircraft.
