    TOK is publicly known as a photoresist supplier to semiconductor fabs, but they are also a critical supplier of TMAH (tetramethylammonium hydroxide) developer chemicals — a material with a dual industrial identity. TMAH is essential for semiconductor manufacturing (developing photoresist patterns on wafers) and is also an extremely dangerous quaternary ammonium toxin: skin contact can be lethal through dermal absorption by blocking acetylcholinesterase (the same mechanism as nerve agents). In April 2014, a subcontractor worker at a TSMC-affiliated Taiwan fab died within minutes of brief TMAH exposure with no apparent skin break. Taiwan subsequently mandated full hazmat suits for any TMAH handling. TMAH represents the category of semiconductor process chemicals that are simultaneously irreplaceable manufacturing inputs and serious industrial safety hazards — concentrated at a handful of Japanese suppliers (TOK, SACHEM) who supply the global semiconductor industry.

    Tokyo Ohka Kogyo (TOK) was founded in 1936 as the Tokyo Chemical Research Institute, making cleaning solvents for the Japanese electronics industry. They developed Japan's first semiconductor photoresist in 1955 — before integrated circuits existed — to serve the printed circuit board industry. When ICs became commercially viable in the 1960s, TOK had a decade of photoresist chemistry experience that Western companies lacked. TOK's 1955 photoresist was a diazo-compound coating that hardened when exposed to ultraviolet light — the same basic chemical reaction (with dramatically more complex molecular architecture) that their EUV resists use today. The photoresist market has never had a major new entrant: the same four Japanese companies (TOK, JSR, Shin-Etsu, Sumitomo Chemical) that dominated the market in the 1980s still supply approximately 90% of global demand. Switching costs are extraordinary — a new photoresist must be qualified at every customer fab, a 12-18 month process per chip generation.
