Toray Industries was founded in 1926 in Kyoto as Toyo Rayon Company — a nylon and rayon fiber manufacturer. Toyo Rayon licensed DuPont nylon technology in the 1950s (paying royalties to the same DuPont that invented nylon) to build Japan's nylon fiber industry. The carbon fiber business began in 1971 when Toray research director Shigeo Otani developed what became the Torayca carbon fiber brand. Toray's carbon fiber became the primary structural material for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (2011) — Toray supplies approximately 70% of the 787's carbon fiber composite panels. The battery separator business grew from Toray's polymer film manufacturing expertise in the 2000s-2010s, as the same precision film manufacturing that made Toray's polyester films for electronics could be adapted to lithium-ion separator base films.
