    Tosoh's high-purity yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ, TZ-series) is used in three completely separate technology systems from the same ceramic powder: (1) Dental crowns — Tosoh TZ-3Y5B is the world's leading dental zirconia; dental technicians mill white zirconia blocks in CAD/CAM machines to produce tooth-colored dental crowns and bridges; ~80% of all-ceramic dental crowns globally use zirconia, and Tosoh is the dominant powder supplier; (2) Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) — YSZ is the solid electrolyte that conducts oxygen ions at 700-900C in stationary power generation fuel cells; Tosoh YSZ electrolyte membranes are qualified for commercial SOFC systems (Bloom Energy, Kyocera); (3) Thermal barrier coatings (TBC) — YSZ powder is plasma-spray coated onto jet engine turbine blades to allow metal temperatures beyond the alloy melting point; every commercial and military jet engine with TBC-coated turbine blades has YSZ; Rolls-Royce, GE Aviation, and Pratt & Whitney TBC qualification includes Tosoh-grade YSZ. The same Japanese chemical company supplies the white powder in a dental crown, the electrolyte in a hydrogen fuel cell, and the protective coat on a fighter jet turbine blade.

    Tosoh Corporation (Tokyo; TYO: 4042) was founded in 1935 as a salt electrolysis company in Shin-Nanyo, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan — one of many postwar Japanese chemical companies built on chlor-alkali chemistry (using electricity to split brine into chlorine and sodium hydroxide). The chlor-alkali foundation gave Tosoh access to chlorine for PVC/VCM chemistry and to sodium hydroxide for specialty chemical processing. Over decades, Tosoh diversified through adjacent chemistries: from chlorine into organochlorines, from industrial chemicals into specialty catalysts and advanced ceramics. Tosoh's zirconia business grew from ceramics chemistry research in the 1980s, initially for industrial applications, then into dental ceramics as the dental CAD/CAM market emerged in the 2000s. Tosoh's Bioscience division (HPLC analytical instruments) emerged from separations chemistry expertise. A 1935 Yamaguchi salt electrolysis plant evolved into a company simultaneously serving alkaline battery manufacturers, dental clinics, jet engine component suppliers, diabetes testing laboratories, and biopharmaceutical manufacturers.
