  • Capacity2024

Trench Austria GmbH invested €16 million in expanding its Leonding production site in 2024, with a further €31 million planned in 2025 — effectively doubling transformer bushing production capacity at the site. This is one of the largest single-site bushing capacity expansion announcements in Europe in years, reflecting severe backlog pressure from the global transformer shortage and HVDC renewable energy buildout. In October 2024, Trench Group signed a supply agreement with GE Vernova Grid Solutions for HVDC DC Wall Bushings, power transformer bushings, and instrument transformers — signaling multi-year committed demand from one of the world's largest transformer OEMs.

  • Origin2023

Trench Group traces its origins to Trench Electric Limited, founded in Canada in 1907, and later German and Austrian electrical engineering companies that specialized in high-voltage transformer bushings and measurement equipment. Siemens acquired Trench in 2000 to round out its power transmission components portfolio. When Siemens Energy was spun off from Siemens AG in 2020, Trench Group became a Siemens Energy subsidiary. Transformer bushings are a low-volume, high-precision product -- the typical 500kV bushing is a custom-engineered 3-4 meter tall porcelain or composite cylinder with oil-impregnated paper insulation. Global bushing production is concentrated in a handful of manufacturers (Trench, Hitachi Energy, ABB Power Products, a few others) who operate facilities in Europe and North America. Extended lead times for bushings can hold up transformer completion, making bushing supply a constraint on grid infrastructure deployment independent of transformer availability.
