Tronox's mineral sands mining operations extract three co-located minerals from the same beach/dune sand deposits — each feeding a different critical material supply chain: (1) Ilmenite → titanium dioxide pigment → white paint/coatings; the opacity in virtually every interior and exterior architectural coating; (2) Rutile → titanium metal (TiO2 feedstock for titanium sponge via Kroll process) → aerospace structural titanium; Tronox rutile is an input for aerospace titanium metal production; (3) Zircon → zirconia (ZrO2) → ceramic tile glazes, dental crowns, nuclear fuel rod cladding, and zirconium alloys for nuclear reactor structural components. The same Australian beach sand deposit that provides TiO2 for home paint provides zircon for dental prosthetics and nuclear fuel cladding. A paint pigment mining company is simultaneously embedded in construction (TiO2 coatings), aerospace (titanium metal), dental medicine (zirconia crowns), and nuclear infrastructure (zirconia/zirconium applications) — all from the same mineral sands deposit.

Tronox traces its origins to Kerr-McGee Corporation (Oklahoma City), a company best known for its role in nuclear weapons production (processing uranium for the Manhattan Project at the Cimarron Enrichment facility) and for the Karen Silkwood case: Karen Silkwood, a nuclear plant worker and union activist at Kerr-McGee's Cimarron plutonium plant, was killed in a 1974 car accident while on her way to meet a New York Times reporter with documents alleging nuclear safety violations; her estate won a $10.5M jury verdict against Kerr-McGee (later reduced and settled). Kerr-McGee acquired several TiO2 operations and in 2005 spun off its chemical division (including TiO2) as Tronox. Kerr-McGee itself was acquired by Anadarko Petroleum in 2005, bringing Kerr-McGee's legacy nuclear cleanup liabilities with it. Tronox filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, partly due to inherited Kerr-McGee environmental liabilities. The TiO2 company that puts the white in house paint emerged from a uranium/plutonium company connected to the Karen Silkwood nuclear safety scandal.
