    u-blox was founded in 1997 as a spin-off of ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), the engineering university that also produced companies including Sensirion (sensors) and the founders of Google Maps. The founding team was academic GPS researchers who saw that GPS chipsets could be made small and inexpensive enough for consumer and industrial applications -- at a time when GPS was still largely military and expensive geodetic equipment. u-blox went public on the Swiss exchange (SIX: UBXN) in 2007 and grew through the smartphone and IoT booms, supplying LTE and GPS modules to trackers, wearables, and connected devices. The ZED-F9P multi-band RTK module (2018) was a deliberate bet on the convergence of precision positioning demand and cost reduction: at $50-$80 per unit, it made centimeter-level GPS accessible to agricultural robotics companies, drone manufacturers, and autonomous vehicle developers who could not afford $500+ NovAtel or Trimble modules. An ETH Zurich spinout building IoT tracking chips accidentally became the chipset inside the agricultural robot revolution.
